About HEIC
Why does your iPhone save photos as HEIC?
Apple introduced HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) as the default photo format starting with iOS 11 and the iPhone 7 in 2017. The format was chosen because it stores images at roughly half the file size of JPEG while retaining the same — or better — visual quality. For iPhone users with limited storage, this is a significant benefit.
HEIC is built on the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard, which was developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). Unlike JPEG, which is a single-layer lossy compression format from 1992, HEIF supports multiple images in a single file, 16-bit colour depth, and superior transparency handling.

The compatibility problem: While HEIC is technically superior to JPEG, it created an immediate compatibility gap. Windows PCs, Android phones, and most web platforms do not natively support HEIC. When you transfer iPhone photos to a Windows PC or share them online, you often need to convert them to JPEG first.
Apple provides a partial solution — when you connect your iPhone to a PC or share photos via certain methods, iOS can automatically convert photos to JPEG. However, this does not always work, especially when copying files directly via a cable or cloud storage. That's where a dedicated converter becomes essential.
